Short description
Dortmund Zoo shows a remarkable stock of animals on a hilly landscape with old trees situated in the Westphalian metropolis. It specializes in animals from South America.
Among them are rarities like giant anteater and tamandua or lesser anteater, which both bred successfully several dozen times.
Other exceptional breeding successes were South American sloths and Brazilian giant otters, which dwell in the modern otter-centre and are rarely kept in zoos.
Many more South American species inhabit the zoo: Humboldt penguins, jaguarundis, guanacos, vicuñas, Brazilian tapirs, maras, capybaras, pudus, collared peccaries, jaguars, armadillos, maned wolves, bush dogs and many more.
One of the highlights is the Amazon House, a three-storey glass house which leds visitors through the tropical world of South American rainforests, from rivers up to the canopy.
Here are presented aquariums, big terrariums with snakes, lizards and crocodiles, free-flying birds and New World monkeys.
The classical variety of zoo animals like big cats, apes, monkeys, hoofed animals and birds is shown as well. Other exceptional species are Amur leopard, roan antelope, African wild dog and dhole.
The farmyard enables visitors to get in close contact with goats, sheep, cattle and many smaller animals.
Ape husbandry has been improved a lot with the new jungle house for orang-utans and tapirs. A rhinoceros house to breed white rhinoceroses is to be created in 2006, a crocodile house is being planned.
An extension area is a done deal. The zoo takes part in numerous conservation and breeding programmes and is a partner of the Stiftung Artenschutz.
