Short description
When Darmstadt´s Vivarium opened in 1965, it was little more than one single building with aquariums and terrariums.
Originally, it was meant as a place for lively lessons of nature study for Darmstadt´s pupils. Later, it developped into a small zoo.
Today, the Vivarium is still the core of the park with its fishes, amphibians and reptiles from all over the world, some of them inhabiting big displays. Notable breeding successes took place here.
Around the Vivarium cluster various old and new houses, one of them accomodating squirrel monkeys, pygmy marmosets and Syke´s monkeys, but also crocodiles. A walk-through aviary for waders is placed in a wooden house.
The rare and threatened Celebes crested macaques have a pond in their house.
Other interesting animals in the park are kangaroos, dromedaries, yak, tapir, birds of prey, owls, sarus crane, wild cats, giant tortoises, various hoofed animals, parrots and other birds.
Marabou storks, zebras and porcupines live at the Africa enclosure. The Ackermann house is a place for exhibitions and lessons of natural history.
The supporter´s society Kaupiana fosters renewal and enlargement of exhibits, especially terrariums for great reptiles like boa and monitor lizard.
In 2005 opened an accessible house for binturongs (who breed very successfully) and Asian small-clawed otters, which is unique in Europe.
A long range concept plans to concentrate on animals from the Southern hemisphere, from South America to Australia.
