Short description
Cottbus animal park was founded in 1954 and developped quickly into a zoo. It is a rambling landscaped park at the Spree river.
Several watercourses and ponds are home to the zoo´s spaciality, a rich variety of waterfowl. More than 70 species, in addition various flamingos, cranes, pelicans and cormorants are presented.
The spacious African steppe accomodates hoofed animals and birds. The zoo is famous for breeding marabou storks, more than seventy successful hatchings so far.
Bactrian camels, banteng, highland cattle, Przewalski´s horses, chitals, wisents, yaks and llamas inhabit generous enclosures. Wild boars, fallow deer and reindeer – the latter complicated in husbandry – are shown as well.
Impressive bald eagles, buzzards, golden eagle, steppe eagle and eastern imperial eagle occupy the bird of prey aviaries. Otters, porcupines and meerkats live in outdoor enclosures, the Humboldt penguins breed regularly.
The old carnivore house is being reconstructed part by part. It accomodates Siberian tigers and Chinese leopards, thereto crested capuchins, boas and Egyptian fruit bats.
The petting zoo delights children with ponies, donkeys, pigs, sheep, goats and cattle.
Elephant husbandry is not in keeping with the times yet, but improvement is being planned and the Asian elephants enjoy their bathing trips to the Spree river.
Facilities for ring-tailed lemurs, kangaroos and Chinese leopards have been built recently. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2004, the park presented a huge aviary for Asian storks.
Visitors may walk through the rock hyrax exhibit, other extraordinary small mammals like gundis, mokos and rock squirrels are shown as well. A tapir display is planned.
