Short description
Chemnitz animal park was founded in 1964. Since 1992, it specializes in threatened species.
The animal stock includes rarities like anoa, Siberian tigers, Persian leopards, mountain goats, fossa and golden lion tamarins.
Small monkeys like pypmy marmosets, cottontop tamarins, Goeldi´s monkeys and Geoffroy´s spider monkeys are highlights of the collection. The ´cat garden´ presents a rich variety of unusual species, e.g. eastern lynx, Oman cat and Amur cat.
The modern vivarium for european and exotic amphibians boasts Europe´s foremost public collection of some 80 species of living salamanders and frogs, among them regularly breeding rarities.
The ´Erzgebirge´ farm with petting area is a special pleasure for children.
Nearly all old facilities have been reconstructed, many new were built and the extension areas offer a great potential.
Since 2000 a new bear enclosure, aviaries for pheasants and parrots and the Australia and South America enclosures were created. At the extension area the tropic house opened, inhabited by monkeys, free-flying birds and rare pygmy hippos.
Hoofed animals, domestic animals and poultry are presented as well. Since 2005 there are also lions, who are to get a new exhibit soon.
Chemnitz animal park takes part in many international breeding programmes. Especially mentionable are the Philippine spotted deer.
The animal park contributes to conservation with breeding of kulan, Przewalski´s horses and Somalian wild ass and as a partner of the Stiftung Artenschutz.
