Short description

Bochum animal park´s core theme is the aquarium and terrarium with reptiles, tropical fish and beautiful living corals.

In also shows an exhibition presenting more than 1400 fossils an a 170,000 l shark basin representing the cross-section of a coral reef.

Other large exhibits present South American habitats: caimans populate an artificial jungle river and may be watched underwater as well as from above. Europe´s first breeding of arowana took place here.

The zoo´s limited exteriors are dominated by exotics like flamingoes, parrots, white-headed capuchins and leopards.

Native animals like lynx inhabit spacious enclosures, aviaries show numerous birds. A speciality are Seychelles giant tortoises.

While raptors are kept in classical falconer´s manner, rare species like cottontop tamarin and lar gibbon breed regularly.

The animal park was founded in 1933 by an association. In 1944, bombs destroyed all buildings, whose reconstruction first led to smaller aviaries and exhibits.

The new aquarium opened in 1988. Today, animal husbandry is species-appropriate in biotope exhibits. The former bear facility is to be transformed into a walk-through enclosure for squirrel monkeys.

Seals live in a seawater pond with tribune and underwater glasses for visitors, the adjacent walk-through aviary accomodates waders and other marine birds.

Bochum animal park takes part in several breeding programmes, e.g. for white-headed capuchin, Eurasian black vulture and rhinoceros iguana, and is a partner of Stiftung Artenschutz.
