Short description
The Tierpark (Animal Park) is Berlin’s second internationally renowned zoo with a choice stock of animals. Located at the parkland estate around Friedrichsfelde Palace, it became one of the largest landscaped zoos in Europe.
Many hooved animals are kept in large herds. Wisents, plains bison, camels from the Old and New World, indian antelopes, water buffaloes and Père David´s deer live spacious enclosures.
The hooves collection boasts many rare and threatened species, including Mishmi takin, musk ox, bharal, Chinese goral, Somalian wild ass, mountain zebra, Persian fallow deer and Vietnamese sika deer.
The famous Alfred-Brehm-House offers a comprehensive collection of big cats and the tropical hall with exotic plants, numerous free-flying birds and Indian giant flying foxes.
At the entrance “Bärenschaufenster” (bear showcase), American black bears in a rocky landscaped display welcome the visitors. More bear species live on outside enclosures, e.g. spectacled bears and polar bears with a huge water basin.
The Pachyderm house accomodates large herds of African and Asian elephants with several calves, white and Indian rhinoceros, sloths, some species of New World monkeys and, at the centre of the big visitor hall, manatees.
The children’s zoo consists of special contact areas and numerous domestic animals, from honey bees to Australian dingos
The ´snake farm´ accomodates mainly a rich variety of tortoises and poisonous snakes. Next door is a house for hummingbirds and crocodiles.
Several new facilities have been built during the last decade: new enclosures for giraffes, zebras, desert antelopes and wild cattle and complexes for Asian and European mountains.
One of the newest buildings is the monkey house, built in traditional style. In 2005, the zoo celebrated its 50th anniversary with new enclosures for mountain animals.
