Short description

Osnabrück zoo was founded as a small animal park, but soon developped into a large zoo with all classical zoo animals: chimpanzees and orang-utans, lions and Siberian tigers, elephants and rhinoceroses.

During the last 15 years, big efforts have been made to improve animal husbandry.

One core theme is the fauna of South America. A South America house with adjacent hall for free flying birds accomodates tapirs, sloths and various monkeys. Macaws, alpacas and spider monkeys are just a few other representatives.

Feeding time at the big exhibit for Californian sea lions is a highlight for every zoo visit. In recent years, new exhibits were built for Humboldt penguins, otters, tigers, apes and many others.

The unusual bear husbandry, with polar and brown bears sharing one facility, led to hybrids. For the wolves, a huge natural enclosure has been erected.

Enlargement of the elephant enclosure and a new elephant house now allows bull husbandry. Rhinoceroses, waterbuck and springbok live nearby.

Owls inhabit a big walk-through aviary. Corals and the Amazon tank are highlights of the aquarium-terrarium, where a special bassin allows visitors to touch koi carp.

One of the newest facilities is the two ha African savannah called ´Samburu´, with giraffes, antelopes, ostriches and a restaurant lodge. The giraffe house also boasts Cape hyrax and weaver birds.

A subterranean zoo opened in 2009, in 2010 the ´Africa world Takamanda´, an extension area with chimpansees, hyenas, bush pigs and various species of hoofed animals.

Osnabrück zoo takes part in more than 20 breeding programmes, among them Humboldt penguin, lion tamarin, Siberian tiger, white rhinoceros and nyala, and is a partner of Stiftung Artenschutz.
