Short descriptionNürnberg Tiergarten (Nuremberg wildlife park) owns one of the largest zoo areas and boasts many spacious enclosures for hooved animals. Here live antelopes and deer, Przewalski´s horse, wild ass and takin.
It is a rambling landscaped zoo with the character of woodland and parkland.
First animal attractions are the giraffe house and the squirrel monkeys. Children love the large petting zoo.
The gorillas inhabit a spacious outdoor enclosure. An old quarry is the beautiful background for several exhibits, e.g. for the ibex and some predators. Expansive ponds are populated by waterfowl.
The dolphinarium, which also has a breeding facility, presents Bottlenose dolphins and sea lions, a large dolphin lagoon is under construction.
In the tropical house, manatees can be viewed under water, as well as from above. Other inhabitants are tapir, sloth, pygmy marmosets and ducks.
Indian rhinoceroses occupy two outdoor enclosures. Reconstruction of the elephant house is an interim arrangement for the dissatisfying elephant husbandry.
´Wasserpark´ (water park) terms a generous area with exhibits that allow visitors to view sea lions, penguins, beavers and otters both above and below the water. A new polar bear facility has been constructed, a new hippopotamus house is being planned.
The zoo is studbook keeper for Malayan tapir and white-naped crane, and takes part in more than thirty other breeding programmes, especially successful with raptors like condor and harpy eagle.
Nürnberg zoo supports conservation organisations, e.g. yacu pacha (protecting aquatic mammals of South America), and is a member of Stiftung Artenschutz.
