Short descriptionMagdeburg zoo is more than 50 years old. It is situated in the north of Magdeburg and has an old stock of trees.
The tropical ape house could be re-opened in 2005. Gibbons, ruffed lemurs, ring-tailed lemurs, guenons and new world monkeys live in Magdeburg, too.
Some of the presented callitrichines, e.g. golden lion tamarin, golden-headed lion tamarin and black lion tamarin, are very endangered in the wild.
Successful breeding of the highly endangered black rhinoceros is Magdeburg´s special pride. Together with the elephants, they share the pachyderm house, which is to be replaced by a new building.
By an inconvenient way, the zoo got its giraffe house: the wooden building with greened roof was constructed during 60 hours with a TV show (Now or never) in 1991.
One of the biggest facilities is the waterfowl pond with several bays, where flamingoes and many species of ducks, geese and others splash about.
Aviaries accomodate owls and raptorial birds. The cat garden includes exhibits for tigers, snow leopards, marbled polecat, dhole and husky.
A new glassed enclosure for lions is situated at the zoo´s centre, other new enclosures provide room for mountain birds, lynx and wolverines. The penguins moved to their new display in 2003.
In 2009, the zoo got an extension area with a new main entrance. Medium-dated projects are an outdoor enclosure for gorillas and a new elephant house called ´Africambo´.
An information centre about conservation of species is planned in the south of Magdeburg. Magdeburg zoo is a partner of Stiftung Artenschutz..
