Short descriptionKarlsruhe Zoo is located centrally within the public gardens near the main station. It presents a rich variety of remarkable exhibits and species.
Its bredding of polar bears used to be world famous, a new big enclosure with underwater glass plates, artificial rocks and icebergs is supposed to continue that success.
Europe´s largest herd of Persian goitered gazelles, living on artificial Lauterberg which is Karlsruhe´s highest point, already produced more than 600 offspring. Another animal rarity are the Magellanic penguins.
A series of African savannah paddocks shows zebras, blesbok, Ankole cattle and the group of giraffes in a joint landscape. Offspring of scimitar oryx went into a reintroduction project in Morocco.
The old monkey house was transformed into a chimpanzee facility, where the outdoor area offers grass ground and climbing devices. Allen´s swamp monkeys, rarely presented in zoos, are another speciality of Karlsruhe.
The old carnivore house (reconstruction planned) accomodates Chinese leopards and lions. The petting zoo boasts a rare sheep race from Romania.
The hippopotamus house was a new kind of zoo architecture in the nineteen-eighties. The Asian elephants still inhabit the old elephant house, though the outside enclosure was enlarged.
Plans for a new elephant house, a facility for snow leopards or a tropical hall are still in an early stage of planning. Firstly, the ´habitat water´ exhibits are completed.
Karlsruhe´s zoo was started by a poultry breeding society in 1865. It was razed to the ground during world war two and generally reconstructed until 1967.
As a member of the Stiftung Artenschutz, Karlsruhe zoo shows its commitment to conservation.
