Short description
From a classical zoo to an adventure park: the ´Future Zoo´ as an EXPO project had been planned long before the EXPO2000 opened in Hannover.
´Gorilla mountain´ made the start in 1996, ´Jungle Palace´ and ´Meyer´s Farm´ followed. The nordic area ´Yukon Bay´ is not in sight yet. New facilities are for wolves and hulman langurs.
African animals populate the ´Zambezi river´ landscape. Boats glide on the river and allow undisturbed views of the enclosures. The hippos live here too, to be watched through glass in their canyon.
The ´Jungle Palace´ hides a complex of exhibits for Asian animals. Elephant husbandry has been improved, which was rewarded by several births since 2003.
The old zoo area boasts bird of prey aviaries, and the tropical house with rare monkeys and reptiles. The jungle house was one of the first of its kind which presented apes within a green jungle scenery.
´Mullewap´ is a children´s zoo with figures from a popular picture book. Rabbits are presented between giant carrots, whereas the guinea pigs inhabit their village ´Neuschweinstein´.
The zoo´s marketing is professional and sometimes obtrusive, but it is still an institution under scientific management and takes part in several breeding programmes.
It looks back on a more than 130 years long and eventful history, the most glamorous period was around 1900.
In the 1960´s, the zoo first devised enclosures which were accepted by hoofed animals as their territories even though they could have jumped over the ditches easily. Antelopes bred very successfully, up to 24 species were shown.
From 1975 to 1995 all building activities were mainly supported by the Friends of the Zoo association, who co-financed the expensive jungle house as well as the big bird of prey aviaries.
