Short description
Augsburg zoo shows animals from all over the world, from hummingbirds to elephants. Thanks to eager construction activities, it is today one of southern Germany´s great zoos. Keeping threatened mammal and bird species is a speciality.
The big cat facility shows rare leopards, cheetahs and lions, partly behind glass.
The Africa panorama at the centre of the zoo is inhabited by giraffes, zebras, antelopes and ostriches.
Visitors have the nowadays rare opportunity to compare African and Asian elephants in their recently enlarged enclosure.
The tropical house offers big aviaries with biotope landscapes, while insects and reptiles occupy numerous terrariums.
The terrarium presents showcases for monitor lizards, boas and the alligator display. Chimpanzees live in a glassed outdoor enclosure which is to be modernized soon.
West Caucasian turs, markhors and Rocky Montain goats inhabit artificial rocks. The once minuscule concrete brown bear exhibit was replaced by a more spacious enclosure.
At the South America and the India exhibits, animals are shown according to their geographic origin.
Baboon island, white rhinoceroses and feeding talks with penguins and pinnipeds are very popular. The seals got a new pool in 2005. The zoo is also partner of Stiftung Artenschutz.
In spite of reconstruction, especially elephant and ape facilitites are outdated. The new management of the zoo will invest here, and a new rhinoceros house is planned, too.
