Short description

Aschersleben Zoo nowadays is one of the biggest in the region.

Native and exotic species live at the hilly wooded park with castle ruins. The last remaining old exhibits from GDR times are replaced briskly.

Enclosures were combined, fences replaced by moats – low-cost measures, expedient but attractive. At the entrance, one of Europe´s biggest colony of lesser flamingos waits for the visitors.

The ´cat garden´ shows endangered big cats, many of which are threatened in the wild. Particularly remarkable is a 500 sqm swamp exhibit with a pool for jaguars.

The ocelots got a new huge enclosure. The spectacled bears and may be watched through glass as well as from a green viewing hill in their 1500 sqm enclosure.

African savannah animals, e.g. waterbucks, live in naturally designed exhibits. The walk-through-aviariy for African water birds shows stone curlews, lilac-breasted rollers, blacksmith lapwing and others.

The tropical house accomodates flying foxes and owl monkeys in special nocturnal displays as well as Nile crocodiles. Squirrel and other monkeys live in walk-through exhibits.

Several threatened species of monkeys breed well at the animal park. Cottontop and golden-headed lion tamarins recently moved to a new facility. The capuchins belong to a rare subspecies.

The threatened Siberian tigers got a new enclosure with water, hills and a viewing tunnel. In 2006, one of the inbred so-called ´white tigers´ was acquired, like those usually shown in Las-Vegas-shows or amusement parks.

The animal park supporter´s society is a partner of the Stiftung Artenschutz.
