Short description
Thuringia´s Zoopark is situated on the ´red mountain´ in the north of Erfurt. The zoo spreads over huge 63 ha, which are not completely accessible for visitors yet.
The pachyderm house hosts elephants as well as nocturnal animals, snakes, lizards, birds, insects and small mammals. Barbary macaques inhabit a generous walk-through enclosure.
Erfurt zoo early realized the importance of protecting rare domestic animals as a cultural possession of mankind. Thanks to them, a rare race of Bulgarian goats still exists.
Many more unusual species of domestic animals are presented at a farm dating from 1861.
Camel husbandry is the Zoopark´s special pride, counting more than 250 births of llamas and bactrian camels since 1970.
The white rhinoceros house offers exhibitions, a bridge affords views into the outdoor enclosures. A generous exhibit was created for bison. The ´lion residency´ opened in 2005, presenting Cape hyrax and spiny squirrels as well.
With primate husbandry as another speciality, Erfurt Zoopark boasts new world monkeys, prosimians, macaques, gibbons - and the only Nilgiri langurs kept outside of India.
Modern enclosures were designed for eagles, Swainson´s lorikeets, colobus and white-fronted spider monkeys, the latter very seldom presented at zoos. A landscaped walk-through aviary is inhabited by northern bald ibises who are threatened by extinction.
´Kangaroo land´ and a new entrance with zoo shop were opened in 2007. In place of the old entrance, a new elephant facility including a bull enclosure will provide seven times more room than their old home.
Erfurt´s zoo successfully breeds numerous endangered species and is a partner of the Stiftung Artenschutz.
