Short description
This zoo is not really situated at the sea, but at the Weser river – no animal park of superlatives, but a collection of extraordinary species on a quite small area.
For a long time, the zoo´s future was not clear. Remediation was badly necessary, but political decisions lasted till 2001. Then 30 million Euros were spent to build the completely new zoo, which opened in 2004.
Today visitors watch the animals behind glass or ditches and get an impression of polar deserts, mountains and tundra.
Diving penguins and gannets, polar bears and fishing pinnipeds may be watched underwater.
The zoo earned a good reputation for its long tradition of pinniped, polar bear, nordic animals and marine fish husbandry and breeding.
Germany´s forth public aquarium opened in 1913 (now closed), but it was not until 1928 that the legendary facility ´Nordlandschlucht´ for polar bears and pinnipeds was created.
Bremerhaven specialises in marine animals and those from cold habitats, including penguins, gannets and keas.
Polar bear husbandry has a long tradition with 29 birth, further breeding is planned.
Pinniped breeding has been successful too, e.g. with South American sea lions and Cape fur seals. Quite exotic at the zoo are chimpanzees, pumas and petting animals for children.
Modern techniques allow the use of clear salt water for animals like seals and polar bears.
