Short description
Situated on the plains of the river Isar with a beautiful stock of trees, Hellabrunn Tierpark offers generous, moated enclosures. It was the world´s first Geo-Zoo and presents the animals corresponding to their origin in neighbouring exhibits.
Ape husbandry has a long tradition. New displays for our closest relatives opened in 2002: jungle atmosphere for gorillas, chimpanzees and visitors. The orang-utans move to the completely reconstructed old gorilla enclosure in 2006.
Numerous species of primates dwell on a large island area. Other specialities of Hellabrunn are Indian rhinoceroses, takin and the polarium with polar bears, pinnipeds and musk oxen.
The listed elephant house – dating from 1914 with one of the first free standing concrete domes in the world – has been adjusted to meet the requirements of modern animal husbandry. Asian elephants and giraffes now live here.
The Jungle Tent accomodates a jungle scenery with free birds below a translucent foil construction, while lions, jaguars and leopards can be admired through glass.
The house for birds and small mammals shows few choice species in roomy exhibits. Small rodents and elephant shrews live in terrariums. A department for nocturnal animals with free-flying fruitbats is added.
The giant tortoises inhabit a glass house with interesting lodgers: a colony of African mole rats. These rodents are presented in a special glass cabinet. The walk-through-aviary, up to 18 metres high, boasts birds of the wetlands.
Abruzzo chamois, Przewalski’s horses, European bison, wisents, Mhorr gazelles and Persian fallow deer testify to the zoo´s efforts to breed and reintroduce especially endangered hoof species for decades.
Since 2006, the old ape station is becoming an information centre about conservation projects.
Hellabrunn’s conservation commitment includes participation in many breeding programmes, support of various in situ projects and partnership with the Stiftung Artenschutz.
