Short descriptionThe zoo´s location at the Reilsberg guarantees beautiful landscape as well as challenges for the construction of animal facilities.
Skillfully placed circuits around that mountain make the zoo seem bigger than it actually is. The 24 m high wading bird aviary at the top became its landmark.
Mountain animals are therefore Halle´s zoological speciality, amongst them rarities including Bezoar ibex, tahr, yak and vicuña as well as interesting smaller species like Northern viscacha, Brazilian guinea pig and American pine marten.
In addition to traditional zoo animals like zebra, kangaroo and flamingo, visitors are presented a rich variety of South American animals (macaw, channel-billed toucan, armadillo, mara, cottontop tamarin, maned wolf, Southern pudu).
Mountain animal exhibits dating from 1901 are still appropriate home for Barbary sheep, West Caucasian Tur and markhor. From here, a beautiful view opens into the Saale valley with the Giebichenstein castle ruins.
Squirrel monkeys inhabit a generous enclosure with an island and a jungle hall with rocks and waterfall.
After almost 20 years of construction, exhibits for brown and Asiatic black bear opened in 1993. They are already obsolete and illustrate the zoo´s lack of space.
By modernization and reduction of animal stock, Halle zoo tries to keep up with modern zoo development. Rhinoceros and giraffe husbandry ended, pygmy hippos replaced their bigger relatives.
Reconstruction brought the chimpanzee house with futuristic steel nets and tropical hall, the monkey house was modernized and enlarged by adjacent outdoor enclosures.
The new big cat house, which opened in 2004, looks quite technical with glass, steel and concrete. In 2005, a crocodile house was built, in 2006 an elephant house opened with outdoor facility on 2000 m².
